Eighth Grade Science Course Syllabus

Year 2018 – 2019

Course Description: Eighth Grade Science includes studies in many physical sciences. This course will follow the North Carolina Standards for 8th Grade Science.

 

Grading:

  • Tests and Projects – 45%: Generally, a test will be administered upon completion of each unit. Students will be given advanced notice of all tests. All students will be given a study guide and will have the option of attending an afternoon or morning review session before each test to help them prepare.
  • Classwork, Quizzes, Labs – 45%: Each student will be assigned class assignments on a weekly basis. Quizzes will be assigned to assess how students are understanding the content before a test. Students will be given advanced notice of all quizzes. Labs, both virtual and hands on, will be given throughout the year to deeper student understanding of content.
  • Homework and Participation – 10%: Each student will be assigned assignments and other tasks to monitor student understanding. Participation grades are taken from smaller assignments like warm ups and exit slips.

 

Checking Assignment and Test Due dates: Parents may check for assignment, project and test due dates/deadlines on their child’s canvas calendar.

Checking Grades: Parents may check their student's academic progress in the 8th grade Science course at any time on the Powerschool website.

 

It is essential to turn in all assignments on time.  Late work is defined as any assignment that is not submitted when it is collected by the teacher, on the day that it is due. Excused absences are the exception. Please note: This policy is subject to change following Union Academy Middle School policy.

 

UA Middle School  Grading Policy for late work:
     1st day late = No higher than an 85%
     2nd day late = No higher than 70%  
     3rd - 5th day late = No higher than a 50%

     No late work accepted past the 5th day.

 

Tutoring Schedule:

I am available on Monday and Wednesday from 3:15 – 4:00 for students who are in need of extra help. There will be an optional review session held in the morning before all tests.

Class Expectations:

  • Students must always demonstrate respect for their fellow classmates, teachers and staff.
  • Academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, will not be tolerated.
  • Students must always bring their daily materials to class and be prepared to participate actively.
  • Students must always be in class and in their seats before the bell rings.
  • No food, drinks or gum is permitted in the classroom (except bottled water).
  • Students must adhere to the rules of Union Academy at all times.
